Eloping in Colorado

Colorado is a unique state because they allow people to self-solemnize or marry themselves by signing their marriage certificate without an officiant or witness. This makes eloping in Colorado very different than anywhere else in the United States, even in the elopement capital, Las Vegas. The only places in the US where you can conduct a self-solemnization wedding are Washington DC and Wisconsin, but in Wisconsin, you have to admit that the state may not recognize your marriage.

So, what do you need to do to self-solemnize? And can you self-solemnize without being a Colorado resident?

Self-solemnization is easy; all you and your partner need to do is go to the Clerk and Recorder’s office and apply for a marriage certificate. Then, you have 30 days to complete the marriage certificate and turn it back into the Clerk and Recorder’s office. And no, you don’t have to be a resident of Colorado to get married here!

Self-solemnization ceremonies can be any structure, length, or location you’d like around the state. You can use traditional inspiration or go more off the beaten path with sand, liquid, or herb ceremonies. With high fire danger throughout the state, you’ll want to ensure that any ceremony aspects that include flames are controlled. Or you can skip the fire and try a hand-fasting or blending ceremony. The possibilities are endless and can be customized to the type of relationship you have with your partner.

Creating your own private wedding and having the freedom to say “I do” after hiking to the top of a mountain together or being in a secluded forest with tall Ponderosa pines surrounding you, or maybe lakeside one of Colorado’s amazing bodies of water could set you and your future spouse up for a solid intimate connection. Maybe you just don’t want your annoying Aunt Sally, or it’s become too expensive to have a big ceremony. No matter your desire to keep it small and intimate, your private wedding is easy to conduct in Colorado with self-solemnization laws.
